Normally, people are faced with many conflicts and confrontations in life and they are unable to deal with them effectively. That is because not much attention is paid to refine and enhance the mind and the intelligence, says Swamiji.
The sixth chapter of Bhagavad Gita speaks about meditation and where the focus should be. Initially some physical aspects of meditation, like the seat, posture etc. are discussed. But it is made clear that the mind must be the focus of meditation and that the whole practice depends on the mind.
In his Aparokshanubhutih, Shankaracharya emphasizes that spiritual sadhana is meant solely to sublimate and enlighten the mind and the intelligence. The Self cannot be realized without constant and sincere practice. So, Shankaracharya gives 15 elements for a seeker to practice and perfect. The senses and the mind must be regulated by constant thought of Brahman (Yama and Niyama). The seeker must renounce the separate, objective status of the world (Tyaga) and understanding the unreachable nature of Brahman, he must dissolve into silence (Mouna).
Before the beginning of creation, in the middle and after the end of creation, only the all-pervading presence is there. When a seeker introspects on it, that is the Desha (state) he wants to reach. It is through our own imagination that the whole world is displayed before us. Brahman alone is bringing up the creator and everything else, in less than the twinkling of the eye. By the word ‘Kala’ we are referring to Brahman, which is non-dual, unfragmented. A seeker must discreetly try to realize the import of ‘Kala’ (time) and be free.
Shankaracharya says that when you sit in a pose, you must be able to think of the Supreme Reality without any interruption. This is Asana. Self-seatedness is the best Asana. A seeker must contemplate on the Consciousness which is the source, substratum of everything. Such inwardness to find out the source is Moola bandhana.
Quoting Yogavāsiṣṭha, Swamiji speaks about the Siddhas who contemplate upon the non-moving, unvibrating presence within. He emphasizes that all experiences emerge from the Self. The Consciousness alone is in every perception. Everything emerges and rests upon the Self.
