Prabhata Rashmih – Morning message by Poojya Swami Bhoomananda Tirtha during the Gurupoornima Retreat 2025 at Narayanashrama Tapovanam, Thrissur. In this talk, Swamiji explains the difference between Namajapa and Mantrajapa, and their significance in spiritual practice.

Japa means recitation. Nama-Japa means reciting and chanting the name of the Lord. The attitude of the mind and aim of the chanting, will finally shape the result. Ratnakara (later Sage Valmiki) was given the two syllable nama ‘Rama’ and he took to it wholesomely. By this chanting alone, he was taken to the source of existence and knowledge.
Repeating the letters of a Mantra cannot be called Mantra-Japa. Mantra is not to be orally chanted; it is a mental formula, to be chanted mentally.
Mantra is a complete statement; It has meaning, purpose and relevance. Through the Mantra, the seeker takes up a proposition and strengthens it by diligent practice. By chanting the Mantra, the proposition must be felt, deepened, strengthened, intensified, and made vibrant and powerful. The purpose of the mantra is to generate in the mind the ideation that it expresses.
When the Guru gives Deeksha (initiation) to the seeker, he instils into them a power, an inspiration. It is for the seeker to take it forward, by diligent and wholesome practice.
