Gurupoornima Rereat Sessions by Ma Gurupriya

Householders get attached to the family and spend their whole lives in the maintenance of family and delighting in the family. They feel that they are safe within the walls of the house and that they are imperishable. Because of excessive attachment, they fail to see their inevitable perishability. They forget about the higher purpose of life.

How to remove attachment and develop dispassion? One must keep the Lord in the mind and move around the world with equanimity, recognizing the Lord’s presence behind everything. A seeker must spend his life thinking about the Lord, introspecting on Him. Established in the universal Lord, having the Knowledge, he becomes peaceful and he sees the Lord as the essence of the whole world.

Srimad Bhagavatam says that a householder seeker must not get attached to the family members, wealth etc. He must see all the joys of the world as perishable. He must think of his family life and relationships as a brief meeting between co-travelers. He must live in his own house like a guest, without possessiveness and ego.

A householder devotee must worship the Lord, by performing all the household duties as an offering to the Lord. Imbued with dispassion, he may continue to live at home or enter the forest as an anchorite or take to Sannyasa after entrusting the household affairs to the children.
