Gurupoornima Retreat Sessions by Poojya Swamiji on Vivekachoodamani
In Vivekachudamani, Adi Shankaracharya unambiguously points out that ignorance is deeply embedded in man and it cannot be removed by any weapons or by any rituals. It can be destroyed only with the sharp mighty weapon of discrimination.
Foolish people think that they are the body. But learned people think that they are not the body, but something different from the body. But people graced by discrimination have the firm conviction and realization that: “I am the Self.”
What is the reality of the world? All the wakeful activities, interactions and impacts are wiped off in sleep. This leads to the inference that the world is not a continuing presence; it comes into expression only during wakefulness. So, the entire world is a mental creation and does not have an independent
existence.
Both in the case of the shadow of the body and the reflection in the mirror, one clearly knows that it is not real. In the dream also, one knows that it is only illusory and not real. In the case of the shadow, reflection and dream one does not develop a sense of identity with them. In the same manner, a seeker must not develop an identity with the body.
One aspiring for liberation must exterminate the desire for perishable objects, leave all secular and worldly activities, and with pure and assiduous application and spiritual pursuits, must wash off all Rajo guna propensities.
All the three states--wakefulness, sleep and dream—emerge and subside and are transitory. The ‘I’ is the unchanging substratum and witness of all the three states. It is the ever-present Self, the sentience, the indwelling presence, Consciousness, and it is to be known as dwelling in one’s own heart.
