This was the first talk by Ma during a residential retreat during Malaysia Jnana Yajna 2018.
Venue: Frazer Hills, Residential Retreat
Date: 7 July 2018
In this talk, Ma emphasizes that one needs a teacher to gain any knowledge. To acquire spiritual knowledge, by which one comes to know one’s own eternal nature and goes beyond suffering, one undoubtedly needs a guide (Guru).
A seeker must have wholesome devotion (Guru Bhakti) to the Guru and take complete refuge in him. Unless the mind is fully devoted to the Guru, it will not accept his guidance and instructions wholesomely. How to acquire Guru Bhakti? Devotion to the Guru happens when one is in close association with the Guru.
Scriptures say that by the fond association of a knower (who is free from desires) and by serving him, a yearning for liberation dawns in a seeker. The Mahatma always dwells unbrokenly in the knowledge of the Self. The seeker must seek the company of such a holy person and serve him with fondness, love, and with attention.
Ma says that her own life has been a service to the Guru with great fondness. It meant not only serving him personally but also taking up his mission and serving the whole of humanity. A disciple must be willing to serve his Guru with a full mind and heart, sacrificing his own needs. A true disciple does not serve the Guru according to his/her own convenience, and preferences.
