Gurupoornima Rereat Sessions by Ma Gurupriya

Chanting and explaining the verses of ‘Vairagya Shatakam’, Ma repeatedly emphasizes that Vairagya (dispassion) is one of the four-fold qualities which a spiritual practitioner must have. The sole objective of human life is to gain liberation from the shackles of the mind and intelligence, which can only be through the path of self-knowledge. Central to this path is Vairagya to worldly objects.

Vairagya Shatakam asks the seeker to abandon the constant indulgence to the body and possessions and always perceive the transitoriness of the world. Attachment to the family and possessions can be overcome only by constant introspection on the ephemerality of the world and reflecting on the fact that everything is controlled and animated by the Lord.

A knower of Truth is always inhering in the Self. He moves around freely, free from anxiety, without any expectations. He has no attachment to or expectation from anything in the world. He is always reveling in the bliss arising from the Self.

Life is changeful. The apparent enjoyments have no ever-lasting value. Name, fame, prestige, family, wealth etc. are always associated with stress and problems. How can Vairagya be practiced living in the household? Ma says that a seeker must get rid of possessiveness, clinging, desires, ego and start on the delightful inner adventure. Loving Vairagya, one must increasingly cultivate Vairagya. Accepting whatever providence brings, the seeker must maintain the connectedness with the Lord within.
