14 – Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18 | The Way to Freedom | Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

3 Views | 2 months ago

Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha ji continues to guide our mind and intelligence in understanding the various key aspects of Bhagavad Gita. He says that we must notice and understand that Bhagavad Gita doesn’t speak about anything external (whether it speaks about results of actions, Sannyasa or Naishkarmya siddhi). It speaks only about the mind and intelligence.

Each chapter of Bhagavad Gita is a yoga, says Swamiji. The focus is on the seeker. It emphasizes on the practical aspect of sadhana which enhances human existence. In the 13th chapter Krishna introduces twenty virtues which are the essence of spiritual knowledge, imbibing which a seeker’s mind and vision gets expanded and elevated.

A seeker should become established in yoga-buddhi so that all his activities are transformed into a wholesome pursuit. The mind has to perceive the world as a play of three gunas and surrender to the will and wish of that Supreme Being.

After thoroughly analyzing and highlighting various key concepts of Bhagavad Gita, Swamiji continues with the discussion of Chapter 18. He explains that buddhi (intelligence) and dhriti (will) have also been classified on the basis of the three gunas. Buddhi is the faculty of discrimination that distinguishes between right and wrong whereas dhriti means retentivity and persistence in knowledge.

That intelligence which is able to distinguish between 1)what is to be done and what is not to be done, 2) What is to be feared and what leads to fearlessness and 3) What is bondage and what is liberation, is a sattvika Intelligence.
