05 – Transforming Our Personality | Bhagavad Gita Chapter 14 | Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha

3 Views | 10 months ago

Swamiji begins this talk by giving a succinct overview of the previous sessions. He underlines the fact that human beings have the ability to transform their own personality by introspection and sincere effort.

The three Gunas dominate our activities consecutively throughout the waking hours. When Sattva is dominant, the intellect becomes very sharp, subtle and sensitive in nature. When Rajo Guna becomes predominant, the symptoms of greed, exertion for worldly gain, restlessness, and craving develop.

The Atma is independent, untainted, unaffected and unchanging. Because of our identification with the three Gunas, we feel that we are bound to the body and the activities and the world.

Swamiji explains that a Knower of truth also works under the influences of these Gunas but they no longer bind him. All the Gunas in him become purified. Sattva Guna no longer binds him by Saatvika Sukha or Jnana. Rajo Guna doesn’t bind him by desires, Raga dvesha etc. He transcends all mental affectation caused by the results of any activity he undertakes and demonstrates peace and evenness in his attitude.
